    Today is Sea Day #11. We cruised northeast between Fakarava and Taiohae, Nuku Hiva, our last island of the voyage.  We are travelling north-easterly over the next week.



    The early morning temperature was 29°C, the humidity was about 95%, the sky was mainly sunny with clouds ringing the horizon and since we were cruising there was a wind as we circled Deck 3. The sea swells only about one meter high. We walked before and after breakfast. We enjoyed the meal chatting with Grace from near Brisbane, Australia. Neither of the morning talks interested us. We used the time to sift through the past week’s photos to select the ones to include with the blog. Going to lunch the temperature was 32°C.
    This afternoon there was a  variety show of traditional songs and dances presented by nine of the Philippine crew members, from food and beverage services.  On the ship, 30% of the crew are from the Philippines. The daily itinerary for sea days of possible interest to us are a 10 a.m. presentation, then an 11 a.m. presentation for mornings; then in the afternoon: general trivia; sometimes a 2 p.m. presentation; Cruise Critics game room for card or board games; Afternoon Tea in the dining room and later afternoon Happy Hour in two bars with the second drink just $2.
     Our evening started with 5:15 dinner with Carol, Dennis, Jeff and Susan in the main dining room. It was gala attire in the main dining room and the ship’s photographers were taking people’s pictures at their tables. The special entrée item was broiled lobster tail.  En route to the Mainstage Theater, we all stopped to play the 7 p.m. Trivia game our score was only 9 out of 17. The Lincoln Center Stage performances are a repeat of the first two weeks, so sometimes we listen as we pass the location after dinner. The mainstage performance was the Shamrock Tenors from Belfast, Ireland. We all enjoyed the show.  The eveningtemperature was 29°C,

      Today’s  French Polynesian  island was Fakarava, which is one of 80 islands of the Tuamotu Archipelago (or Tuamotus) .  The Toamotus are grouped into 16 communes. The local time is the same as in Papeete, Tahiti, the capital of French Polynesia. The Fakarava atoll with six neighbouring atolls have been named by UNESCO as a Natural Biosphere Reserve. IT is the third largest atoll lagoon in the world.   We arrived in the bay near Taioha’e, Nuku Hiva in the  Marquesas Islands , the eastern most archipelago of French Polynesia. This was our last destination in French Polynesia. The ship had travelled over 1,500 km from Tahiti. Only 6 of the 12   Marquesas islands are inhabited.  Nuku Hiva is the second largest French Polynesian island, after Tahiti.      Taioha’e is tucked into a bay that is part of a collapsed volcanic crater along the south coast of Nuku Hiva. There was a mist in the 25°C air and the humidity was close to 100% with a light wind.  As the ship approached Nuku Hiva you could see the clouds hiding the top half of the island’s mountain range, you could not see Mount Ooumu.  To the east of the bay, tumbling down the cliff from at least 120 meters, a thin waterfall could be seen as a white streak on the rockface.    After breakfast we went to the Mainstage Theater to get our tour sti...

   March 20 at 5:58 p.m. EDT was the official start of astronomical spring. However, here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on the other side of the International Dateline that time converts to 12:58 p.m. March 21 st .    Today, the ship was anchored by Tabuaeran (Fanning Island), in the Republic of Kiribati, pronounced  'Keeree-baus'. It is an atoll surrounding a lagoon.  The ship was anchored near the tiny settlement of Napari      The island’s official name, since independence is  Tabuaeran .   The island, actually an atoll, is only three meters above sea level at its highest point and located at the north eastern side of the Line Islands group, eight of which are part of the Republic of Kiribati.  The atoll surrounds a shallow 42.6 square mile lagoon.
